Remarkable Spaces

New study spaces in Main Library
Teams from across the Library worked together to create over 100 new study spaces in Main Library. The additional facilities were made possible by repurposing staff office space. The study spaces bring natural light to the Blue 1 area and have been an instant hit with students.

John Rylands Next Chapter
The John Rylands Next Chapter project, which was initiated in 2021, is intended to prepare the John Rylands Research Institute and Library for the challenges and opportunities of the mid-21st century. It will enrich and transform the experience for both researchers and visitors through new exhibition facilities and redesigned spaces for research, teaching and learning, and public engagement.
During 2022/23, the consultant team, led by project managers Arcadis and conservation architects Donald Insall Associates, worked with Library staff to develop and refine the proposals, from initial concepts into detailed designs.
Exhibition designers Nissen Richards Studio have developed exciting proposals to incorporate sector-leading exhibition facilities which harmonise with our Grade-1 listed building.
A state-of-the-art Advanced Imaging Laboratory will enable us to upscale our imaging capabilities and to collaborate more closely with researchers on heritage science projects.
The ground floor of the modern extension will become a high-quality, flexible event space. This will significantly expand our facilities to host academic and public events, such as small conferences, lectures, meetings and collection-based seminars. This new space will enhance our support for research, public engagement with research, and teaching and learning.
Whilst work progresses in 2024/25, the Rylands will remain open to researchers and student groups, with some restricted access for visitors.

Crawford House Library Staff Hub
We opened the Crawford House Library Staff Hub in March 2023. The open plan space includes individual desk spaces, a bookable Collaboration space, a group meeting room and two other smaller meeting rooms equipped for hybrid meetings.

Collection Care Lab at Crawford House
When Joule Library closed, the Collection Care Lab was relocated to Crawford House. This new lab optimises space and expands operational capacity, allowing us to better meet the needs of modern conservation practice.
Notable improvements include:
- The addition of a dedicated, tailored room for advanced analytical techniques such as fibre and pigment identification.
- A high-grade fume cabinet to allow the safe and secure use of hazardous chemicals in support of scientific testing and application of treatments in strict adherence to health and safety protocols.
- A dedicated, deionised water supply for controlled and accurate use in treatments and analysis.
The space was designed to be multifunctional. It is divided into four distinct zones catering for:
- Scientific analysis
- Conservation treatment and modern lending repair
- Heavy-duty machinery, including a new state-of-the-art box-making machine
- Secure storage of collection materials
The adjustable space facilitates the hosting of conservation workshops and educational sessions to students, staff and external groups. This expanded capacity enhances the lab's role as a versatile hub for conservation and research initiatives.
