An evidence-based course that has been shown to increase happiness

We're offering first year students the chance to take this 4 week course, developed by the University of Bristol, exploring the science behind human happiness through positive psychology, neuroscience, economics and philosophy.

What you will gain

During this course you will be introduced to scientific evidence that demonstrates how you can improve your wellbeing, not just now, but for the longer term.

You will be given:

  • scientifically proven techniques to help you maintain a positive and healthy mind
  • strategies to help you through the tough times as well as appreciate the good times
  • tangible practices to achieve a more fulfilling life, with your happiness levels monitored throughout.

This is a great opportunity to improve your mental well-being, and to meet and interact with other new students.

This is a non-credit-bearing course so does not count towards your degree. You will receive a certificate on completion of the course and your participation will also be recorded on your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR).

What's involved

You'll take part in four weekly sessions on campus on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 5 October 2022, 2-4pm
  • Wednesday 12 October 2022, 2-4pm
  • Wednesday 19 October 2022, 2-4pm
  • Wednesday 26 October 2022, 2-4pm

These sessions will include a live, interactive lecture delivered online by lecturers at the University of Bristol, followed by a 'Happiness Hub' where you'll have the opportunity to discuss the content of the lecture in your group with the help of a facilitator.

You'll be set 'homework' each week to try out some 'Happiness Hacks and you'll have access to pre-recorded lectures and other course materials on Blackboard.

You'll also complete a short survey before and after you take part in the course, to monitor your wellbeing.
